You Are Here with Serge Aimé Coulibaly

I wanted to question the role of an artist in society.

Serge Aimé Coulibaly

Serge Aimé Coulibaly

Serge Aimé Coulibaly improvises a dance questioning if art can change what’s going on in the world today and what steps we have to take to create an impact.

Filmed as part of the You Are Here season at the 2019 International Festival.

The choreographer brought his Faso Danse Théâtre to Edinburgh to perform Kalakuta Republik, a dance carnival of insurrection which drew inspiration from the music and the scandalous life of the Nigerian singer and musician Fela Kuti; a politically active artist who angrily denounced the corruption of power, sexism, inequalities, and multinational corporations. Coulibaly's undoubtedly political shows have been hailed as visionary with their critical look at modern Africa and the West.
