Press play on this week's playlist to discover the works by Sir James MacMillan in our 2019 programme.

This year we mark the composer's 60th birthday with five concerts during the International Festival, and what better way to celebrate than getting a taste of what's to come this August. Scotland's national orchestras - Royal Scottish National Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra - all lead concerts to highlight MacMillan's breadth of work, with the latter joining forces with eminent chorus The Sixteen and youth chorus Genesis Sixteen for the world premiere of the composer’s Fifth Symphony, Le grand inconnu.

Christopher Bell will conduct the Scottish premiere of MacMillan’s The Culham Motets as well as his poignant oratorio All the Hills and Vales Along written to commemorate the fallen of the First World War, while the brilliant Nash Ensemble perform his powerful piano trio, Fourteen Little Pictures.
