This summer brings an opportunity to hear Brahms' works in two orchestral concerts and two intimate recitals.

Johannes Brahms in 1889

The Scottish Chamber Orchestra plays all four of Brahms' symphonies across two concerts at the Usher Hall on 18 & 19 August. Get ready for incredibly emotional performances, as they conclude Robin Ticciati's journey with the Orchestra as its Principal Conductor. Earlier this year, Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Robin Ticciati released a recording of Brahms' symphonies, which got fantastic reviews.

The symphonies are rich and diverse works, so it's a good time to revisit Classic FM's handy guide to getting to know them. Did you know it took Brahms 21 years to complete his first symphony?

If you prefer your Brahms in a more intimate setting, you can treat yourself to two wonderful mornings in August at The Queen's Hall. On 15 August, Edinburgh-born mezzo soprano Catriona Morison, winner of 2017’s BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition, will sing songs by Brahms, as well as Schumann and Mahler. On 23 August, Canadian violinist James Ehnes and Scottish pianist Steven Osborne take on Brahms' richly melodic Violin Sonata No 3, as well as works by Ravel, Debussy, and Prokofiev.

Sample some of Brahms' works in our playlist below.
