News Story

For our final playlist, and with one week to go until the International Festival begins, we asked you what you're most looking forward to hearing live this August.

It's time for our playlist of People's Picks, where we share songs from the International Festival programme that have been recommended by you, our audience. And it's quite the eclectic mix, ranging from the choral, with the National Youth Choir of Scotland featuring "Five Spirituals" from A Child of Our Time on 5 August, to the new pioneering pop of electronic producer SOPHIE, who appears a special club night curated by Numbers on 11 August.

Experimenting in-between the genres are Anna Meredith, whose classical/pop hybrid album Varmints is performed by the Southbank Sinfonia on 11 August, and Martyn Bennett's folk fusion album Bothy Culture, which has been transformed for a live performance by a large-scale orchestra on 21 August.

These two shows highlight the talent in Scotland's contemporary music scene as part of the Light on the Shore with Edinburgh Gin Seaside programme, which also includes the Scottish Album of the Year 2017 winners Sacred Paws playing on 24 August in an all woman-fronted line-up at Since Yesterday: Unsung Pioneers of Scottish Pop.

From further afield in contemporary pop, lots of you are excited for St. Vincent on 26 August and John Grant on 20 August (so many, in fact, that we had trouble choosing just one favourite song from each to include!).

And more of you are looking forward to our Bernstein birth centenary celebrations, which take place with performances from Baltimore Symphony Orchestra on 24 and 25 August, the London Symphony Orchestra on 10 August, the Hebrides Ensemble on 25 August, and finish with our Virgin Money Fireworks Concert on 27 August. Also mentioned from the classical music programme are "Let the Bright Seraphim" from the Dunedin Consort's majestic rendition of Handel's Samson on 13 August and the dream-like "Nyx", which the Los Angeles-based youth ensemble Colburn Orchestra will play on 20 August.

Thanks to all of you who sent us your top songs - one thing's for sure, this is going to be a great August brimming with fantastic and thought-provoking music.
