Opening Event Young People Call

Take part in #FiveTelegrams

Blog

Young people aged 16 - 26 have the chance to participate in a pretty exciting project at this year’s International Festival…

Edit: Rehearsals for participating in Aberdeen Standard Investments Opening Event: Five Telegrams have now started. If you are interested in taking part, please email Julian.Almeida@eif.co.uk as soon as possible.

Nice! What is it?

We’ll cut to the chase. It’s the Year of Young People and we’d love to see you take centre stage to help bring the vision of composer Anna Meredith and 59 Productions to life. We’re inviting you to be part of a flashmob group that will perform some singing and basic movement as part of the Aberdeen Standard Investments Opening Event: Five Telegrams.

Sounds amazing! But what about the singing/movement skills required? I’m not exactly Beyoncé…

No experience is necessary - as long as you feel passionate about it and are ready to give it your best, we can’t wait to have you on board.

You will be coached by choreographer to the stars, Nathan Clarke, who has worked with the likes of Carly Rae Jepsen, Rihanna, One Direction, the Spice Girls and Fifth Harmony, alongside Edinburgh’s own Stephen Deazley who leads the Love Music’s Community & Junior Choirs. You’ll learn everything you need to feel confident and enjoy the process and the performance.

Also, have we mentioned the costumes?

Wait, it won’t be a mascot costume or something, will it?

Not at all, we’re talking fashion here! Performance Costume students from the Edinburgh College of Art have designed and made beautiful outfits for the participants. But that’s all we can say here, as we don’t want to spoil the surprise for the audience of thousands…

Thousands of people?!

Yes! Our opening events in previous years attracted huge crowds keen to kick off Edinburgh’s festival season together. You’ll be playing an integral part in the event, but don’t worry – we won’t put you on the spot. You’ll be performing in a group of a couple of hundred like-minded people living in Scotland.

All sounds great, just let me check my calendar. When is it that you’d need me?

Aberdeen Standard Investments Opening Event: Five Telegrams is at 10.30pm on Friday 3 August 2018, so keep that evening free. On top of that, you'll need to attend at least three of the rehearsals on 21, 22, 28 July, and 1 & 2 August. See the exact times here.

OK, count me in! How do I get involved?

Rehearsals for participating have already started, but if you would like to take part please send an email to Julian.Almeida@eif.co.uk as soon as possible. You can also take a quick look at the summary of all the information about participating.

Just one more question: will I get any souvenir I can keep?

Yes, indeed! You’ll get a Year of Young People Participation Certificate signed by the First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

And just a reminder what The Harmonium Project that kicked of the 2015 International Festival looked like:
