Tribute to Alfred Brendel
About Tribute to Alfred Brendel
The late pianist and composer Alfred Brendel had a long history of memorable recitals and lectures at the International Festival.
There was an intellectual prowess behind all his work, with The Guardian describing him as ‘at once one of music’s most rigorous intellectuals and most mischievous minds’.
Honouring this legacy, we have invited three outstanding pianists to pay tribute to their mentor and friend, highlighting composers close to his heart. Firstly, Festival regular Steven Osborne focuses on Brendel’s beloved Schubert. Then, Paul Lewis, a former student of Brendel, performs a programme of Chopin and Mozart. Finally, Pierre-Laurent Aimard honours Brendel with a combination of Schubert, Beethoven and composers who Aimard has frequently collaborated with – Ligeti and György Kurtág.
