Pierre-Laurent Aimard
One of the world’s greatest pianists covers three centuries of music in this wide-ranging solo recital.
Pierre-Laurent Aimard is famed for his searing insights into contemporary music, and equally for his powerful, inspirational performances of earlier repertoire. As a founding member of Pierre Boulez’s Ensemble InterContemporain, and winner of numerous awards worldwide, he is a visionary artist – and a much-admired regular visitor to the Edinburgh International Festival.
Aimard’s typically wide-ranging solo recital reflects his all-encompassing musical passions in works stretching across three centuries of music. He begins in the freewheeling, rule-stretching world of the keyboard fantasia, exploring four composers at their most unrestrained: from Sweelinck’s dazzling contrapuntal masterpiece to CPE Bach’s entertaining mini-sonata, from the deep emotions of Mozart at his darkest to Beethoven displaying his legendary powers of improvisation.
Aimard concludes his recital with four pieces from Liszt’s visionary musical travelogue Années de pèlerinage, including the sparkling impressionism of the fountains at the Villa d’Este, and the deep introspection and glittering keyboard fireworks of Vallée d’Obermann.
