Historic win for Brazilian actor Wagner Moura ahead of his International Festival debut.

Moura won the Golden Globe on Sunday, 11 January for best actor in a drama for his role in The Secret Agent. He is the first Brazilian actor to win a Globe in the category.

Wagner Moura makes his Edinburgh International Festival debut this year as he joins Brazilian director Christiane Jatahy to open the 2026 theatre programme with A Trial – after An Enemy of the People, 7 - 10 Aug.

Written by Christiane Jatahy, Lucas Paraizo and Wagner Moura, A Trial is a powerful continuation of Henrik Ibsen’s classic play, transplanted to a modern-day courtroom to offer a sharp look at authoritarianism, fake news and public judgment. Tickets go on sale in March.

A Trial – after An Enemy of the People is co-produced by Edinburgh International Festival, Centro Cultural de Belém, Holland Festival and Festival d’Avignon.
