Your visit to Usher Hall

Usher Hall is home to our series of world-class orchestras, soloists and operas in concert.

We ask that you arrive at the venue in plenty of time as latecomers may not be admitted.

Please note that there is no cloakroom facility to store belongings, but Usher Hall provides coat rails on every level. Please limit bags to one small handbag or backpack per person (no larger than 30cm x 30cm x 15cm) and keep bags with you at all times.

Under 16s should be accompanied by a responsible adult over 18.

In the interests of all audience members, babies and children under 4 years old are not permitted in events whose main audience is not children.

Edinburgh is very compact, which makes it ideal to explore on foot or by bicycle. See below for information about getting to the venue.

  • Bus stop (Usher Hall): 1, 10, 11, 15, 16, 24, 34, 36, 47, 47B
  • Taxi rank on Lothian Road
  • Haymarket Station 0.6 miles
  • Tram stop at Shandwick Place
  • Accessible parking bays on Grindlay Street (5 bays) and Cambridge Street (5 bays)

Access

Venue Accessibility

  • Main entrance through glass wing has level access and power assisted doors
  • Box Office has low counter and no loop system
  • Lift access to all levels
  • Bars at Box Office and Upper Circle have step free access
  • Bars in Stalls accessible via two steps (with handrails), and Grand Circle accessible via two steps (no handrail). If you are seated in these areas, venue staff can assist you with getting to the bar if you ask.
  • There are approximately 180 seats available across the various foyer spaces
  • Assistance dogs are welcome and can be looked after by venue staff
  • Sensory Room available in foyer of Grand Circle, ask staff for precise location
  • The average width of seats throughout the auditorium is 45cm
Two accessible toilets:  
  • Stalls level
    • By box office – left hand transfer
  • Grand Circle level
    • By staff office – left hand transfer
    • By lift – right hand transfer 

Auditorium Accessibility 

  • Wheelchair spaces are located in the Stalls and Grand Circle levels
  • The best seats for people transferring from a wheelchair or with limited mobility are aisle seats in the Stalls 
Stalls information:
  • All seats in the Stalls have good legroom, however if you require additional legroom, easy access with walking aids or for wheelchair transfer the following aisle seats are particularly good - E19, E32, G18, G32, J18, K33, P34, V15, AA38
Grand Circle information:
  • For step free access select seats in row D, all other rows have steps to access with no handrail
Upper Circle information:
  • Seats are cushioned with a wooden back and fold down. In addition they have reduced legroom compared to other parts of the auditorium
  • This level is accessible by lift but all seats are accessed by steps, except seats B1–B6, B85–B90 which do have step free access
  • The steps up to the different rows in this area are very steep, they are not suitable for anyone with mobility requirements
  • This area is very high up and is not suitable for anyone who experiences even mild vertigo
  • Seats H20–24, 42–46, 64–68 have a restricted view due to a safety barrier 

Further information

  • Loop system in the auditorium, turn hearing aid to ‘T’ position
  • We recommend booking seats in the centre of the auditorium for a clear view of captioning screens
