corto.alto

The Mercury Prize-nominated Scottish jazz artist performs an energetic gig, joined by a collective of outstanding musicians.

Translating as “short.tall” in Spanish, corto.alto is a nod to this Glasgow artist’s Irish-Spanish heritage and a pun on his real name, Liam Shortall. corto-alto’s debut album Bad With Names was nominated for the 2024 Mercury Prize, and was fizzing with experiments in jazz, electronic music and club culture.

Formally trained at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, now praised for making jazz popular with Gen Z audiences, the prolific, multi-instrumentalist producer, composer and performer has collaborated with artists including Soweto Kinch, Nubiyan Twist and anaiis.

Following performances at Montreux Jazz Festival and Glastonbury, corto.alto tours America in Spring 2026 before bringing a blistering live show to Edinburgh, with Shortall as the bandleader of a large crew of musicians, many of whom have been Shortall’s friends for years.
