Thomas Quasthoff Quartet
Bass-baritone and jazz singer Thomas Quasthoff joins three German jazz stars in For You, a concert dedicated to his listeners.
German magazine Der Stern described bass-baritone Thomas Quasthoff as ‘the man with the most beautiful voice in the world’. And though a classical singer by training, he’s a musician with remarkable expertise and insights across many musical genres. He brings the same sense of sincerity and unerring good taste to all he performs, whether it’s opera or art song, folk or jazz.
Following the death of his brother in 2012, Quasthoff stepped back from performance for more than a year, only to immerse himself in jazz and learn what he describes as a new instrument – the microphone. He returned to enormous acclaim as a jazz singer and his exceptional jazz voice has since then brought him accolades across the world.
Quasthoff has named his wide-ranging jazz programme For You, because he dedicates it to his listeners, old and new, who have remained committed to his music making, whatever the genre.
He’s joined by an intimate ensemble of three exceptional jazz performers. Dieter Ilg is one of Germany’s most respected bassists and has performed with Quasthoff since 2007. Wolfgang Haffner is the country’s best-known drummer, with a career that extends well beyond jazz, and a technique blending delicacy and power. Simon Oslender is one of the fastest rising stars in German jazz on piano, organ and keyboards.
