The inequality of class in the creative industries is one of the biggest issues within the sector, yet it is an issue which is being consciously ignored by arts and cultural organisations across the UK.

Creatives and communities from working and under-class backgrounds experience severe, structural barriers toward their access, inclusion and representation within the creative industries, and at present this shows no signs of changing.

Common People is a call to action; a commitment by organisations to creating meaningful and sustainable change to ensure that arts and culture truly is accessible to everyone.

Working and under-class creatives, activists and local residents will unite with cultural representatives from Edinburgh’s festivals and venues, alongside arts organisations from across the UK. They will investigate what needs to be done to create sustainable change within the work of these organisations, and demand that they actually commit to doing it.

David Loumgair of COMMON will be joined by acclaimed artists Scottee,Bryony Kimmings, Ink Asher Hemp, Heather Marshall, Kathryn Oakley and Hannah Lavery, who will lead parts of the event, and organisations will have opportunity to learn about the lived experiences of working and under-class creatives and local residents, to hear the reality of what it means to experience inequality.
