São Paulo Symphony Orchestra
The first woman conductor of the Last Night of the Proms and a student of Leonard Bernstein, US conductor Marin Alsop is a remarkable force in classical music worldwide, as charismatic in personality as she is exuberant in her performance.
Alsop took the helm of Brazil’s São Paolo Symphony Orchestra in 2012, quickly turning Latin America’s largest and leading orchestra into a truly world-class ensemble, its concerts big in sound and heart.
Alsop directs the Orchestra and the Edinburgh Festival Chorus in two extrovert choral masterpieces. The Chôros No. 10 by Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos depicts the arrival of man in the Amazon’s unspoilt wilderness in wild, fantastical music of extraordinary colour, while Bernstein’s sunny, life-affirming Chichester Psalms brings infectious West Side Story-style rhythms into the heart of the church.
Alsop concludes her concert with the immense power of Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony, whose triumphant conclusion has provoked controversy ever since its 1937 premiere.
