Zehetmair Quartet
The string quartet founded by exceptional solo violinist Thomas Zehetmair in 1994 has been praised worldwide for its vivid, invigorating performances – played entirely from memory – that are alive to the music’s details, yet full of a fresh, questing spirit.
Haydn String Quartet in F, Op 3 No 5 ‘Serenade’
Hindemith String Quartet No 5
Haydn String Quartet in C,Op 76 No 3 ‘Emperor’
Following acclaimed earlier Festival recitals, the Quartet performs music by two Germanic giants. It’s disputed whether Haydn was really the composer of the brief, charming ‘Serenade’ Quartet, but the ‘Emperor’ Quartet is one of his boldest, brightest works, incorporating the melody that became the German national anthem alongside energetic high spirits and a tempestuous finale. The foursome completes the programme with Hindemith’s impetuous Fifth Quartet.
