Night Walk For Edinburgh

Night Walk for Edinburgh

The Fruitmarket Gallery / Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller

Discover an alternative, unseen Edinburgh. A city where memory and history collide, where the strange and the unexpected skew your sense of what is real.

See times and book tickets

Canadian artists Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller present an intimate, one-on-one video walk in which the audience are guided by specially created video through Edinburgh’s Old Town at twilight. The sound is recorded using binaural microphones to create a three-dimensional sound experience as Cardiff’s voice leads you on a journey through the city past and present, conjuring a parallel Edinburgh that engages all the senses.

Cardiff and Miller are internationally recognised artists, renowned for their work in installation, video and sound. They were last in Edinburgh for their 2008 exhibition, The House of Books Has No Windows at The Fruitmarket Gallery, and have created unique audio walks for cities around the world. Whether you are a visitor or a resident, Night Walk for Edinburgh will transform your perception of the Festival City.

Please bring a form of ID or a credit card with you to leave in exchange for the tablet.
The walk uses a digital tablet and a pair of headphones, to be collected from The Milkman, 7 Cockburn Street, Edinburgh. The tablet and headphones must be returned to The Milkman as soon as you've finished the walk.
It is a night walk in the Old Town of Edinburgh and the route includes staircases, steep hills and uneven surfaces in low light. The piece may also provoke a sense of disorientation so please be aware of your surroundings as you take part. We recommend comfortable shoes and appropriate clothing.
This art work involves approximately 1km of walking on pavements. The route goes over some cobbles and uneven surfaces. There are 122 steps up and 43 steps down and some steep slopes. Throughout the walk, participants listen to audio through headphones as they hold and watch a small screen which plays film. A subtitled version is available on request at the time of the event, subject to availability.

★★★★ Cardiff and Miller remind us of the magic technology can create, and the darkness just under the surface of the city we inhabit.
