Sounds of Ihsane

Immerse yourself in the musical worlds of North Africa and the Middle East.

Viola d’amore player and composer Jasser Haj Youssef is joined by the rest of the on-stage musicians from dance production Ihsane. Together, they take a deep dive into Middle Eastern and North African music.

Tunisian-born Jasser Haj Youssef is trained in classical, jazz and traditional Arabic music. As well as composing the score for Ihsane, he plays the Baroque viola d’amore, whose resonant sympathetic strings are ideally suited for modal Arabic music. After his 2025 performance at The Hub, he was described as ‘an extremely skilful and versatile player’ by The Scotsman.

Youssef is joined by Palestinian oud player Nizar Rohana and Italian percussionist Gabriele Miracle Bragintini. Fadia Tomb El-Hage and Mohammed El Arabi Serghini add their vocals to the mix, as Youssef leads the group through mesmerising melodies.
