Simon Thoumire: Scots Fiddle & Clarsach

Composer and concertinist Simon Thoumire takes Scottish folk tunes on a thrilling ride into the unknown, with breathtaking results.

Thoumire declares that he’s ‘very interested in music that bends round corners’. His brilliantly inventive compositions for Scots fiddle embody an ongoing dialogue between Scottish folk music and the classical tradition.

Thoumire introduces this concert of his work, with regular collaborator Patsy Reid on fiddle and viola, along with a stellar line-up of folk musicians, including Gaelic singer Mairi MacMillan and Alice Allen on cello.

Discover Thoumire’s distinctive voice across traditional Scottish dance forms – strathspeys and reels - with fresh musical interpretation. You’ll also experience Gaelic poetry inspired by birds interpreted into a bagpipes solo, and the world premiere of Thoumire’s clarsach concerto which fuses with electronics to explore the sustaining power of cultural heritage.
