Senny Camara Ensemble

AGA KHAN MUSIC PROGRAMME

Revel in the enchanting sounds of West African traditional music from Senegalese kora player Senny Camara and her ensemble.

“I firmly believe that the kora harmonises our souls, giving us the feeling that we understand each other... without borders or judgements,” says Senny Camara. With the gentle grace of her performances, she has conquered the hearts of kora fans old and new.

Camara fell in love with the kora, a West African stringed instrument, aged seven, after hearing it on the radio. But this beautiful instrument was traditionally the preserve of male griots (hereditary oral historians and poets), and it wasn’t until her early twenties that she found someone willing to teach her.

Inspired by great musicians from Ali Farka Touré and Toumani Diabaté to Nina Simone, Camara has never looked back. She was selected by the Aga Khan Music Programme ‘for joyously elevating the spirit of the feminine in Senegalese music through [her] mastery of the kora and evocative songwriting.’
