Tracking the tragic history of millions of enslaved Africans who were abducted and trafficked across the Atlantic to the Americas by European powers, the exhibition explores the myth of racial hierarchy that enabled slavery, lynching and segregation. This legacy continues to perpetuate racism today.
The Legacy Museum is one of four national institutions created by human rights organisation, the Equal Justice Initiative. Founded by eminent civil rights lawyer, Bryan Stevenson, the Legacy Sites demonstrate that the power of history is in telling the truth.
That legacy, that pain and suffering, is a part of the American story. But the other part of the American story was how millions of enslaved people found a way to love in the midst of agony — to hold up one another and find a way to survive, and then to thrive, build and create.
