Schola Cantorum de Venezuela
Led by Artistic Director María Guinand, the dazzling choral forces of Caracas’s Schola Cantorum de Venezuela bring a vibrant exploration of the sacred and the profane to this year’s International Festival. Demonstrating their commitment to social change, Schola Cantorum de Venezuela is part of the El Sistema project, a Venezuelan programme which offers music education to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Alongside a thrilling opportunity to hear diverse works from the Latin American choral repertoire, this musical journey from the 19th to the 21st centuries will cross the Atlantic to take in gems from composers such as Ralph Vaughan Williams and Estonia’s Veljo Tormis.
The concert, which is split into two distinctive halves, begins with remarkable choral music inspired by the Christian tradition, from Sir James MacMillan’s O Radiant Dawn to Jake Runestad’s Alelluia. The latter half of the concert promises an even more daring repertoire, summoning ancestral rituals as well as references to popular culture. The works of Carlos Guastavino, R. Murray Schafer’s Magic Songs, and many more, can be discovered in this programme.
