Austrian bass Günther Groissböck and Scottish pianist Malcolm Martineau join forces for a recital of Austro-German song. The regular collaborators are celebrated as among the finest interpreters of German song, or ‘Lieder’, in the world. They perform music by great Lieder composers including Robert Schumann, Richard Strauss and Hugo Wolf. The concert includes rarely heard songs by Hans Rott, a composer admired by Gustav Mahler and Anton Bruckner – both of whom are also featured in the programme.
Together, Groissböck and Martineau have created a recital embracing a range of themes, taking the audience on an exhilarating musical journey. Knights and kings populate songs by Schumann and Rott, and Bruckner leads us through the seasons from the freshness of spring to wistful autumn. The second half of the programme is devoted to late-Romantic Lieder, from Strauss’s ecstatic vocal writing and radiant harmonies to Mahler’s extraordinary Wunderhorn settings, culminating in the heavenly vision of ‘Urlicht’.
