Classical Music Archive Performances: The Queen’s Hall Series
A selection of chamber concerts and recitals are broadcast on BBC Radio 3 for International Festival audiences to enjoy at home.
Every year, The Queen’s Hall Series brings together extraordinary chamber concerts and intimate morning recitals from world-leading artists. A selection of 15 of these special concerts is drawn from the Festival archives, featuring highlights from over 11 years of unforgettable performance. The series features as part of BBC Arts Culture in Quarantine, which continues to bring the arts to audiences across the country during a time when they need it the most.

Monday 10 August: Pianist Elisabeth Leonskaja recreates one of Chopin’s last ever concerts, which the composer played in a house on Edinburgh’s Queen Street in 1848, at the 2009 International Festival.
Tuesday 11 August: Colin Currie & Friends join forces in 2015 for a programme of exhilarating music for two pianists and two percussionists, including works from Bartók and Steve Reich.
Wednesday 12 August: Mezzo soprano Sarah Connolly’s recital of opulent songs by Strauss and Debussy from 2015, accompanied by Malcolm Martineau.
Thursday 13 August: Nicola Benedetti alongside the world-renowned Academy of Ancient Music and Richard Egarr, in a 2018 showcase of witty and theatrical Baroque works featuring Vivaldi’s Concertos.
Friday 14 August: German singer Andreas Scholl joins pianist Tamar Halperin to deliver a wide-ranging programme of Classical and Romantic song in 2013, from the drama of Schubert’s Death and the Maiden to folk-song settings by Brahms.
Monday 17 August: An intimate piano recital from Mikhail Pletnev in 2017 features an all-Rachmaninov programme, including the rarely performed First Piano Sonata.
Tuesday 18 August: In 2014, mezzo soprano Anne Sofie von Otter assembled a collection of songs and instrumental music produced or played in Terezín during the Nazi reign of terror. This recital sees her perform them with an ensemble of exceptional colleagues.
Wednesday 19 August: Trio Zimmermann perform work by Mozart, Schoenberg and Schubert in this ravishing performance from 2012.
Thursday 20 August: From the 2011 International Festival, Jean-Guihen Queyras, in partnership with Alexandre Tharaud, performs a repertoire for piano and cello from Marin Marais and Kodály.
Friday 21 August: Baritone Florian Boesch brings his provocative account of Schubert’s Die schöne Müllerin to the 2016 Queen’s Hall Series alongside regular collaborator, eminent Lieder pianist Malcolm Martineau.
Monday 24 August: Chiaroscuro Quartet contrast works by Bach, Haydn and Schubert in their 2017 concert.
Tuesday 25 August: From 2018, historical keyboard player Ronald Brautigam performs Mendelssohn and Chopin as they would have been heard by 19th century audiences.
Wednesday 26 August: Les Vents Français celebrate French wind music at its elegant best with this recital from 2012 featuring works by Ravel and Taffanel.
Thursday 27 August: A performance from Dunedin Consort and Louise Alder in 2016 filled with works by Handel, including his dramatic cantata Il delirio amoroso.
Friday 28 August: Christian Tetzlaff and Leif Ove Andsnes present a wide-ranging recital of Violin Sonatas by Janáček, Mozart and Shostakovich from 2017.
