Stephen Hough
A cultural phenomenon and a true polymath, British pianist, composer, writer and thinker Stephen Hough is one of the most important and distinctive artists of his generation.
Stephen Hough is a keyboard player of astonishing technical brilliance and profound insights, and performs a powerful, provocative programme of spiritual music by three great pianist-composers, joining them in his own recently unveiled Third Sonata.
Charting a turbulent journey from darkness to light, Hough begins with Schubert’s tragic and deeply personal A minor Sonata D784, before Franck’s stormy expression of doubt and faith in his hugely virtuosic Prelude, Chorale and Fugue, with its triumphant ecstatic resolution.
Hough’s Piano Sonata III ‘Trinitas’ is a captivating, Liszt- and Messiaen-tinged meditation on his own Catholic faith, both witty and commanding, and he concludes with four potent yet poignant piano showpieces by Liszt.
