Spirit of '47 | 2017 International Festival

Fire Down Below

Spirited Voices

This discussion panel includes prizewinning Jamaican Poet Laureate and novelist Lorna Goodison, Grenadian writer and editor Jacob Ross, Guyanese artist and academic Roshini Kempadoo and Marina Salandy-Brown, Director of the NGC BOCAS Literature Festival in Trinidad.

As Britain emerges from the Second World War, change is afoot in the far-flung Empire. In the Caribbean, debates about self-determination intensify. At the same time, economic challenges lead many to migrate, causing issues of citizenship, and crises of identity and culture.

These issues, many of which persist today, will be in focus as prizewinning Jamaican Poet Laureate and novelist Lorna Goodison, Grenadian writer and editor Jacob Ross and Guyanese artist and academic Roshini Kempadoo join Marina Salandy-Brown, Director of the NGC BOCAS Literature Festival in Trinidad.

Two champion Extempo singers, a risqué form of rhyming calypso, who perform under the stage names of Short Pants and Black Sage, add a wry musical take on the discussion.
