Some helpful tips to make sure you end your festival experience with a bang at the 2019 Virgin Money Fireworks Concert.
1. Buy your ticket for the best view in the city
Enjoy the full fireworks concert experience from Princes Street Gardens, with live music from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Edinburgh-born mezzo soprano Catriona Morison. Each firework is choreographed by international fireworks artists Pyrovision to match the music being played, we even have a specialist conductor just for the fireworks! They’re tucked away behind the scenes, listening to the music and following the score to make sure each explosion happens at just the right moment.
2. Get to know the music before you go
We’ve put together a playlist with a flavour of what you can expect from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and mezzo soprano Catriona Morison. From Bizet’s Carmen to Dukas’ The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, give it a listen before you go and you’ll be able to hum along on the night.
3. Arrive early
This is a busy event and we do expect queues, plan ahead and arrive early if you want to bag a good spot in the gardens. Gates will be open for priority ticket holders by 6.15pm and for standard ticket holders and Ross Theatre ticket holders by 7.00pm. Make sure you check your ticket and head to the right entrance – you don’t want to waste time queuing up at the wrong gate!
Not sure how to get there? Lothian Buses have got you covered.
4. Pack a picnic (but leave the table at home)
Make a proper night of it and pack a picnic to enjoy in the sunshine (and maybe a flask of something warming to enjoy under the stars as the evening goes on…). We're also delighted to have Edinburgh Gin selling cans of their delicious ready-to-drink gin and tonic. You can find their Edinburgh Gin van on the bottom path between the bandstand and the fountain.
We advise bringing a proper waterproof picnic blanket, or similar, as recent weather conditions mean the ground may be muddy in places. Things to leave at home include tables, umbrellas, the kitchen sink… (you can find a full list here). There will be a lot of people in the gardens and it’s easy to trip over furniture in the dark. We want everyone to have a good view and everyone to be safe.
5. Keep your camera at the ready
With gorgeous gardens, spectacular fireworks and Edinburgh Castle in the background, it’s a photographer’s dream (and not a bad spot for a selfie either). Post your best fireworks photos using #VMFireworks and we’ll share our favourites on social media.
And finally, here are some fun facts about the Virgin Money Fireworks Concert in numbers – a little insight behind the scenes into how this magical evening is made.
