Herald Young Critics 2014

You are here

In its 11th year, the Herald Young Critics programme offered S5/S6 pupils – many of whom have never engaged with the Festival before - the opportunity to see and review a piece of work at the Festival during August, covering opera, music, theatre and dance. In 2014, 56 pupils from five Edinburgh schools participated in the scheme.

In 2014, 56 pupils from Royal High, Boroughmuir, Broughton, Holy Rood and Portobello watched, heard, experienced and reviewed Aldeburgh Music's Owen Wingrave, Shostakovich's Leningrad Symphony performed by the I, Culture Orchestra, Ganesh Versus the Third Reich from Back to Back Theatre and Brett Bailey’s Exhibit B.

In June, each group of students received an in-school workshop, delivered by Herald journalists. One review from every category was printed in The Herald alongside a professional review, and each of those was eligible for the Herald Cherub Award at the end of the Festival. In addition, all of their work is available to read online here.

The winner of this year's Herald Cherub award was Clare Masson, for her review of Owen Wingrave.
