Herald Young Critics 2015

In its 12th year, the Herald Young Critics programme offered S5/S6 pupils – many of whom have never engaged with the International Festival before – the opportunity to see and review a piece of work at the International Festival during August, covering opera, music, theatre and dance.

In June, each group of students receives an in-school workshop, delivered by journalists from The Herald. One review from every category is printed in The Herald alongside a professional review, and each of those is then eligible for the Herald Cherub Award at the end of the International Festival. In addition, all of their work is available to read online here.

In 2015, 70 pupils from five Edinburgh schools participated in the programme. Students from Boroughmuir, Broughton, Holy Rood, Portobello and Royal High reviewed Mahler’s Symphony No. 5, performed by the European Union Youth Orchestra, FFS, Ex Machina’s 887 with Robert Lepage, Ballet am Rhein’s Seven and Komische Oper Berlin's richly reimagined The Magic Flute.
