Festival City

Your Festival Needs You!

We are inviting YOU to share sounds and impressions of Edinburgh and its festivals and co-create a one-movement orchestral work that will premiere at Edinburgh International Festival at the Usher Hall on 27 August 2013.

With your help American composer Tod Machover will compose a short new work called Festival City to reflect Edinburgh and its yearly transformation through the festivals.

First, we need you to provide raw material to initiate development of the piece at beginning of July.

What can you submit?

  • What is the first sound you hear in the morning?
  • What does your street sound like?
  • Do you regularly pass a busker?
  • Do you enjoy the sound of crowded foyers or standing ovations?

These are just some examples, but it is not only sounds that you can submit, any impressions are welcome too:

  • Do you think your favourite Festival memory can inspire the composer?
  • Or maybe you have an old postcard or a photograph from the Festival that reminds you of that special vibe of Edinburgh in August?
  • Is there an iconic performance you never forgot?

Share it with us and have an impact on what Festival City will sound like!

Whether you are based in Edinburgh or live anywhere else in the world, whether you have or have not attended the Festival in the past, we would like you to participate in this project. Just like there would be no Festival without the audience, Festival City can’t be created without your contribution.

To give you a hint, this is what has been submitted so far:

How can you contribute?

It is quite simple and there are a few ways you can do it, so choose the option that suits you best:

Send us an email to festivalcity@eif.co.uk attaching your sound (ideally 5-20 seconds) or any other file that captures your impression of Edinburgh.

Call our Festival City hotline on 0131 2520 131 and record your sound (or tell us your Festival story) on the answer machine.

Record and upload your sonic material* to SoundCloud and share it with us.

What happens next?

The Constellation and Cauldron apps are now live! You can start creating your own scores for Festival City. These patterns and collections of sounds will contribute to the next stage of the project.
