Munich Spring 2008!

Preliminary Travel Plans for Edinburgh International

Festival Patrons and Muses in Spring 2009

Munich: Germany's Secret Cultural Capital

Working together once again with Edinburgh-based Osprey Holidays, Edinburgh International Festival is delighted to invite Patrons and Muses to join a memorable visit to Munich in Spring 2009.

The capital of Bavaria is rightly proud of its vibrant cosmopolitan atmosphere and exceptional museums, churches, performance venues and historic sights. Munich's origins trace back to a small, 8th century settlement established by monks, hence its name (from ze den Munichen, meaning simply ‘home of the monks') and its heraldic arms. The citizens of Munich have been known for centuries for their love of the arts and the veritable wealth of first rate opera, music and museums combined with excellent dining and shopping opportunities is both impressive and tempting. We hope you will agree!

The magnificent Nationaltheater München is home to the Bavarian State Opera and State Ballet. The elegant Prinzregententheater hosts opera, ballet and orchestral concerts, with regular appearances from one of Munich's top class orchestras, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. Chamber music, ballet and opera are performed in the delighful setting of the Cuvilliés-Theatre, considered to be Europe's finest surviving Rococco theatre. There are two auditoriums in the Residenz's modern theatre: the Herkulessaal features orchestral works and the Max-Joseph-Saal presents chamber music. Operetta and the lighter side of the main operatic repertoire features in the lovely old Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz.

The Old Town is the geographical heart of the city and contains a fascinating and thoroughly enjoyable mix of fine buildings, bustling squares, ancient churches, fountains, and shopping. The city boasts rich and varied art collections: the Residenz Palace, former residence of Bavarian kings; the Pinakothek der Moderne, bringing modern and contemporary painting and sculpture, jewellery, graphic art and the collection of the architectural museum together under one roof; the Alte Pinakothek with notable European art from the 14th to the 18th centuries; the Neue Pinakothek, exhibiting a large group of 19th and early 20th century German works as well some internationally known modern masters; the Glyptothek museum, housing Ludwig I's personal assemblage of Greek and Roman sculptures, the antiquities collection and Lenbach House, built in 1891 for the society artist Franz von Lenbach.

Other highlights include the outstanding German paintings on display at the Schack-Galerie, the lovely Englischer Garden, the huge and remarkable collection at the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum, the enchanting Hofgarten Palace Renaissance garden, the Haus der Kunst arts centre offering visitors an insight into the treasures of Germany's royal residences and the splendid Jugendstil house of the painter Franz von Stuck. Just beyond the city centre stands one of Europe's most beautiful palaces, Schloss Nymphenburg with pavilions, lodges and wonderful botanical gardens. We hope you will join us.
