About the Performance

Founded in the tradition of grand classical ballet, the State Ballet of Georgia has soared under the bold artistic direction of the internationally lauded Nina Ananiashvili, prima ballerina of the Bolshoi and principal guest artist with American Ballet Theatre.

Nina Ananiashvili is revered worldwide for her purity of line, musicality and impeccable phrasing – her interpretation of Giselle is thought by many to be definitive. As Artistic Director she has imbued these qualities in her company of talented dancers.

Love, betrayal, madness and the supernatural – the tragic story of a young woman’s steadfast devotion to her faithless lover is a tour de force of balletic storytelling.

Village girl Giselle falls in love with a young man she knows only as Loys, but who is in fact the nobleman Albrecht, engaged to another and merely toying with her affections, with tragic consequences.

Giselle is one of the best loved romantic ballets of all time and this spectacular and romantic production features sumptuous costumes, lavish sets and musical accompaniment by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Ms Ananiashvili will dance the role of Giselle in two of these performances.

Reviews

‘Put these dancers on a big stage with live music and they can do Georgia proud.'

- The New York Times

Nina Ananiashvili has never failed to light up the stage. The star presence she brings...invariably fills every scene with drama.'

- The New York Times

'I kept having to remind myself that it had been 21 years since I saw her dance her first Western performance of the role, in Paris with the Bolshoi ... She is just as fresh now. The eyes are still doelike, the lines of the legs and arms have the same lovely, calm flow, the responsiveness to the other characters onstage is still touching and vulnerable, and her timing and phrasing remain wonderfully direct.'
