About the Performance
Eclairs sur l'au-delà (Illuminations of the Hereafter) is Messiaen's final work. It is a powerful testament to his personal philosophy and an eloquent summary of his colourful musical language.

By turns ecstatic and subtle, Eclairs sur l'au-delà also reveals Messiaen's lifelong fascination with birdsong. This is orchestral music on a grand scale with over 120 players onstage creating an intricate mosaic of sublime sound.

Thomas Adès's new work was commissioned by the Berliner Philharmoniker and premiered to great acclaim last year. Its title derives from a Hebrew word: Tevot imagines a poetic world in which our very existence is transported on an ark swirling through the cosmos.

Ilan Volkov's skills as a conductor are shown to their best effect in this compelling repertoire.
