About the Performance

The suffering soul of a holocaust victim takes over the body of his American half-brother.

A woman is possessed by the spirit of her lover, and must choose between continuing this supernatural union and taking a living but unloved husband.

In Jewish folklore, a dybbuk is a restless dead soul which inhabits a living person. This intense and gothic production blends two existing tales of such spirits - a landmark Yiddish play and a short story. In each case, the possessed must decide whether to keep or abandon the past - embrace or exorcise their dybbuk.

Through the interweaving of the two stories, director and adaptor Krzysztof Warlikowski raises questions about Poland's relationship with its Jewish population in the 20th century - to embrace or to exorcise.

The superb cast includes Magdalena Cielecka and Andrzej Chyra, most recently seen in the Oscar nominated film Katyn.

Reviews

‘Dybbuk by Warlikowski is the negation of all the sentimental performances and Oscar-rewarded movies about ‘Jews and Holocaust', after which the audience may shed a tear or two and then go home. It's a cutting honest voice...'
